Minister of VROMI, Patrice Gumbs Jr., announced major infrastructure and housing initiatives this week, marking significant progress toward St. Maarten’s sustainable development goals.

Road rehabilitation on Billy Folly Road (Pelican Road) is set to begin Thursday, November 13, with completion expected by Friday, December 5, weather permitting. The works, executed by Wynwood Roads Infrastructure, will include a partial one-lane closure from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.

The $590,000 project is being funded through a public-private partnership, with local businesses contributing $496,500 alongside the government’s $94,000. Minister Gumbs thanked the partners for their commitment, calling the initiative a model for future collaborations in national development.

He also invited the public to a consultation session on the St. Maarten Wastewater Management Project, scheduled for Wednesday, December 10, at the Belair Community Centre. The $25 million project, co-funded by the St. Maarten Trust Fund and government, aims to expand the sewage network — especially in Cul-de-Sac — to protect public health and preserve coastal ecosystems.

On housing, Minister Gumbs said the government is awaiting funds from the Netherlands to purchase land at Remainder Belvedere Estate, while a new housing policy nears completion. He added that regular meetings continue with the Housing Foundation to address inventory and plan upcoming projects.
