The President of Sint Maarten’s Parliament, Hon. Sarah Wescot-Williams, is attending the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly, or EuroLat, held from December 1 to 3 at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium.

On the first day, President Wescot-Williams joined her counterparts from Aruba and Curaçao, along with representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean, for a preparatory meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean component of EuroLat. The session reviewed upcoming committee meetings and reflected on the recent 4th EU–CELAC Summit in Santa Marta, Colombia. Topics discussed included inclusive digitalization, climate financing, protection of strategic ecosystems, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, sustainable trade, human mobility, and migration management.

The official opening ceremony featured speeches from leaders across the European and Latin American components of EuroLat, including Secretary-General Belén Martínez Carbonell and Jordan Schwartz, Executive Vice-President of the Inter-American Development Bank. Key messages emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships, protecting democracy, advancing digitalization, and fostering cooperation between Europe and the Latin American and Caribbean regions.

EuroLat is a multilateral parliamentary assembly that brings together 150 members — 75 from the European Parliament and 75 from Latin American regional parliaments, including Parlatino, Parlandino, Parlacen, Parlasur, and the national congresses of Chile and Mexico — providing a forum for dialogue and collaboration.

President Wescot-Williams’ participation highlights Sint Maarten’s active role in international parliamentary cooperation and engagement on global issues affecting the region.
