New traffic measures took effect today in Philipsburg as St. Maarten heads into its high tourist season. The Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of VROMI, and the Police Force have introduced restrictions aimed at improving public safety and reducing street crime.

The main change: scooters and motorcycles are now banned from Front Street and Back Street. Authorities say the move comes after an increase in robberies where two-wheeled vehicles were used as quick getaway transportation.

The ban runs Monday to Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and also applies on public holidays and during late-night shopping events.

There’s another adjustment for drivers: vehicles can no longer enter Front Street westbound at the Voges Street intersection, a step officials say will support better traffic control and enforcement.

New traffic signs have been installed, and everyone—residents, visitors, and delivery drivers—is asked to follow the posted rules. Those living within the restricted zone may need to plan their movements during regulated hours.

Authorities emphasize the goal isn’t inconvenience, but protection: keeping Philipsburg safe for shoppers, workers, and tourists.
