SINT MAARTEN — The UNESCO Sint Maarten National Commission has successfully hosted its 4th Annual Kite Flying Competition, bringing together primary school students for a day of culture and creativity.
Held at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex, students showcased handmade kites as part of the UNESCO Wire Bending Program, which teaches traditional craftsmanship skills.
Top honors went to Quincy van Heyningen, who won the boys’ category, and Yaëly Jansen, who took first place among the girls.
Judges evaluated each kite based on flight performance, construction, durability, and creativity.
Organizers say the event plays an important role in preserving cultural traditions, while giving young people a fun, hands-on way to learn.
Officials also praised teachers, mentors, and participants for helping keep St. Maarten’s heritage alive for the next generation.
