A new vision for Caribbean tourism is emerging, centered on what is being described as “Renewal” — a model that positions the region as a global leader in restorative, wellness-focused travel.
The concept, outlined by regional strategist Cdr. Bud Slabbaert, reimagines the Caribbean not just as a destination for leisure, but as a place for healing — combining climate, culture, science, and tradition to restore physical and mental well-being.
At its core, the proposal calls for the development of a pilot location that would serve as a prototype for the region. This “Renewal ecosystem” would go beyond traditional spa tourism, integrating medical credibility, cultural authenticity, and community-based experiences.
A key element of the concept is the incorporation of Indigenous Taíno principles, including holistic approaches to health that connect body, mind, and environment. Practices rooted in nature, ritual, and community would be combined with modern wellness science to create a uniquely Caribbean model.
The initiative also highlights the potential economic impact, positioning Renewal tourism as a high-value niche that could diversify and strengthen island economies.
If implemented, the concept could redefine how the Caribbean competes globally — shifting from traditional vacation offerings to a distinctive identity built on heritage, sustainability, and human well-being.
