Police in St. Maarten have arrested two suspects in connection with ongoing investigations into the import and export of illegal narcotics, as efforts intensify to combat drug-related crime on the island.

A 36-year-old suspect was taken into custody on April 7th for the importation of soft drugs, while a second suspect, aged 22, was arrested a day later in connection with the export of hard drugs. Authorities also carried out a house search in the Middle Region as part of the investigation. Both individuals remain in custody as detectives from specialized units continue their work.

Police emphasized that drug trafficking remains a serious regional threat, often linked to organized crime, violence, and money laundering, and noted that cooperation with international partners is key to disrupting these networks.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, the Court of First Instance has convicted four individuals involved in the violent Splash Jewelers robbery in July 2025. Sentences ranged from six to seven-and-a-half years in prison, reflecting the severity of the coordinated attack.

The court heard how suspects used a vehicle to crash into the store, threatened security with a firearm, and assaulted a store manager with a sledgehammer during the robbery. One additional suspect was acquitted of direct involvement but convicted of handling stolen goods.

Prosecutors say the case sends a clear message that violent, organized crime will be met with firm legal consequences.
