Police in Sint Maarten took firm action during the opening Jump-Up of Carnival 2026, confiscating fourteen scooters as part of a major safety operation.

The jump-up, which began on L.B. Scott Road around 8:15 Friday night and made its way to Festival Village by 10:30, drew large crowds—but also raised concerns over reckless scooter activity.

According to the Police Force of Sint Maarten, several riders ignored clear instructions and attempted to bypass roadblocks, creating dangerous situations for both pedestrians and participants along the route.

In response, officers carried out targeted controls in and around the Festival Village, inspecting a total of forty-five scooters. Many were found to be in violation of legal requirements, including missing documentation or being left unattended.

Fourteen scooters were ultimately confiscated, along with one quad bike that failed to meet technical standards.

During the same operation, police also arrested a male suspect on suspicion of narcotics distribution. He was taken to the Philipsburg police station and later issued an eight-hundred-dollar fine.

Authorities say the message is clear—reckless behavior, especially during major public events like Carnival, will not be tolerated. Police remain on high alert, committed to ensuring a safe and orderly celebration for everyone.
