Story:Saint Lucia has officially withdrawn from hosting the 2027 CARIFTA Aquatics Championships due to construction delays at its National Aquatics Centre.
The decision was confirmed by the Saint Lucia Aquatics Federation, which cited setbacks in completing the facility in Beauséjour, Gros Islet in time for the event.
Construction on the center began in April 2025 and was expected to be ready by March 2027, but officials now say that timeline will not be met. The facility, located near the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, is set to include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, warm-up pool, and covered seating.
Despite the setback, authorities say the project will continue, with completion now expected within the next ten to twelve months.
Following Saint Lucia’s withdrawal, The Bahamas has submitted a bid to host the championships in Nassau, while Trinidad and Tobago has offered to serve as a backup host if needed.
The regional swimming event is scheduled for March 26 to 31, 2027, with Jamaica already confirmed to host the 2028 edition.
