Fresh calls are being made for greater transparency and accountability at NV GEBE, as the Alliance for Progress, or ACP-SXM, has formally urged the Public Prosecutor's Office to consider opening an independent investigation into the utility.
According to the party, the request stems from what it describes as growing public concern over the management and governance of GEBE, an institution that plays a critical role in supplying electricity and water to homes and businesses across the country.
ACP-SXM argues that the utility has faced a series of challenges in recent years, including operational disruptions, financial pressures, procurement questions, and governance issues that have affected public confidence. The party believes these matters warrant an impartial legal review to determine whether any criminal conduct or administrative wrongdoing may have occurred.
The organization emphasized that its request should not be interpreted as an accusation of guilt against any individual. Instead, it says an independent investigation would allow the relevant authorities to establish the facts objectively and reinforce confidence in the country's institutions.
The party also noted that public utilities occupy a unique position within society. Because they manage essential services and significant public resources, maintaining strong governance, transparency, and accountability is fundamental to preserving public trust.
Beyond the immediate concerns surrounding GEBE, the issue raises broader questions about public sector oversight in St. Maarten. Good governance experts often point out that independent investigations—when warranted—serve not only to determine whether laws have been broken, but also to identify weaknesses in governance systems and recommend improvements that can prevent future problems.
ACP-SXM has therefore called on the Public Prosecutor to carefully assess the available information and determine whether a formal investigation is justified under the law. The party says such a process, if undertaken, should remain independent, evidence-based, and free from political influence.
As of publication, the Public Prosecutor's Office had not announced whether it will act on the request, and no formal investigation had been confirmed. Likewise, no findings of wrongdoing have been established.
For many residents, the discussion extends beyond one utility. It reflects a wider expectation that public institutions entrusted with essential services should operate with the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and public confidence.
