The Tax Administration is reminding residents that they are not required to pay Room Tax when staying at local accommodations in Sint Maarten.
The clarification follows questions from the public about who the tax applies to.
According to the Tax Administration, the law states that Room Tax is charged only to people who are not registered in Sint Maarten's Civil Registry. That means registered residents are exempt when staying at local hotels, guesthouses, apartments, or other accommodations.
To receive the exemption, residents must present valid proof of residency, such as a Sint Maarten identification card, when checking in.
Officials are encouraging both residents and accommodation providers to familiarize themselves with the law to ensure it is applied correctly.
The Tax Administration says it will continue its public education efforts to help residents and businesses better understand their rights and responsibilities under Sint Maarten's tax laws.
