CHARGES FILED IN DEADLY GUYANA FERRY DISASTER
Authorities in Guyana have filed murder charges against the captain and two crew members of the MV Barima as an international commission of inquiry begins investigating the country's deadliest maritime disaster.
Captain Kevin Price, Chief Mate Rondell Dwayne Roberts, and Cargo Superintendent Delon Granderson appeared before a Georgetown court after the July 18 sinking, which claimed 73 lives, while about 30 people remain missing. The three were remanded into custody pending their next court appearance.
The government has also launched an independent international Commission of Inquiry to examine the causes of the tragedy, including allegations of overcrowding, discrepancies in the passenger manifest, cargo handling, safety procedures, and possible professional negligence. The five-member panel includes legal and maritime experts from Belize, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The 87-year-old state-operated ferry capsized while traveling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, despite having recently been certified seaworthy. Officials have acknowledged irregularities, including passengers missing from the official manifest and reports that members of the crew tested positive for marijuana following the disaster.
The inquiry is expected to determine accountability and recommend reforms aimed at strengthening maritime safety and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
