ST. KITTS UNVEILS LANDMARK PROJECT AS EARTHQUAKE SHAKES REGION
St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew says the Symbol of Love Monument and Museum will become a landmark unlike anything else in the Western Hemisphere.
The approximately 30-million-dollar development will transform the abandoned Fort Thomas property into a cultural and tourism destination while preserving the site’s history.
Plans include the Symbol of Love Monument, Caribbean and Commonwealth museums, botanical gardens, restaurants, shops, a banquet facility, and a waterfront jetty.
The government says construction is generating hundreds of jobs, with more than 300 permanent positions expected after completion.
Meanwhile, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded east of Saint Lucia shortly after three Sunday morning.
The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre placed the shallow earthquake approximately 45 kilometres east of Castries at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Tremors were reportedly felt in Saint Lucia, Martinique, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. No injuries, damage, or tsunami warnings were reported.
QUICK FACT: The Eastern Caribbean lies near the boundary of the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates, making earthquakes a natural and recurring regional event.
