DEATH TOLL RISES TO 71 AFTER COLOMBIA EARTHQUAKE

Colombia has declared a nationwide natural disaster after Monday’s powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake killed at least 71 people.

Government figures confirmed 40 deaths in Risaralda, 27 in Valle del Cauca and four in Chocó, where the earthquake’s epicentre was located.

The quake struck near San José del Palmar shortly after seven-thirty Monday morning and was felt across Colombia and parts of Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela.

At least 30 buildings reportedly collapsed in Cali, while significant damage was also recorded in Pereira and other communities across Colombia’s coffee-growing region.

Flights were suspended at six airports as authorities assessed possible structural damage.

Hospitals in Cali evacuated some patients but continued providing emergency services.

President Abelardo de la Espriella ordered the military and other government agencies to mobilize resources as rescue teams searched affected areas.

Authorities say there is no tsunami threat but are warning residents to remain alert for aftershocks.

The casualty figures remain subject to change as assessments continue.
