Government says it is looking at two ways to reduce long-term spending: buying more of the buildings it uses and tightening controls on government vehicles.

Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina says the country should move away from constantly renting properties from third parties and instead build up government-owned assets.

He says officials are first reviewing all current rental contracts to determine which buildings are still needed. Government is also in talks with pension fund administrator APS about possible financing arrangements to help purchase properties in the future.

Finance Minister Marinka Gumbs says government vehicle use is another area where savings can be made.

She says limiting who is allowed to use government vehicles could reduce fuel, maintenance and replacement costs.

Both proposals form part of a wider effort to cut unnecessary spending and improve how government manages public resources.
