Sint Maarten’s fisheries sector is getting a boost with the arrival of three Fish Aggregating Devices donated by the Government of Curaçao.

The devices, known as FADs, are designed to attract pelagic fish such as mahi-mahi, tuna, wahoo and amberjack to specific offshore areas, making them easier for local fishers to locate.

TEATT Minister Grisha Heyliger-Marten says the donation will help reduce the time and fuel fishers spend searching for fishing grounds, while supporting local livelihoods and food security.

Two of the devices are expected to be deployed at approved offshore locations, while the third will be kept as a backup.

The FADs are equipped with lighting, radar reflectors and AIS tracking for maritime safety.

A technical team from Curaçao will assist with installation, which will take place once weather, marine conditions and hurricane-season considerations allow.
