A new youth program is launching in Sint Maarten to give students hands-on experience with artificial intelligence, robotics, filmmaking, digital literacy and social-emotional learning.
The pilot, called “A Step Beyond,” will run from September through June and is being led by Stichting EGO with the National Institute of the Arts and Mediawegwijs Netherlands.
The program starts September 14 with an intensive ten-day course covering filmmaking, podcasting, interviewing, editing and online media.
Students will also learn about fake news, privacy, screen addiction, AI, online identity, algorithms and responsible digital decision-making.
Robotics activities will introduce coding and electronics through tools such as mBots and BYOR.
The project also includes training for 20 educators, helping schools build longer-term capacity in digital literacy and AI.
Classes will mainly involve students ages 12 to 18 at St. Dominic High School, with some participation from other schools.
