St. Eustatius is preparing for one of its biggest Statia Day celebrations in decades as the island marks 250 years since the First Salute to the United States.
The main commemoration will take place on November 16th at Fort Oranje, exactly 250 years after the fort answered the salute of the American brig Andrew Doria in 1776.
A full week of activities will run from November 10th to 16th under the theme “The Statia Spirit Perseveres, Saluting 250 Years.”
Demand for accommodation has grown so sharply that the Statia Government has secured the Victory I as a floating hotel.
The vessel will add 95 staterooms and space for up to 190 guests from November 10th to 17th.
Government says the extra capacity will help accommodate returning Statians, members of the diaspora and international visitors.
The ship will also make a scheduled stop in St. Maarten on November 11th to pick up additional guests.
A shout-out to our viewers in Statia, where this year’s celebration will mark one of the island’s most significant historical anniversaries.
