Journalists from St. Maarten, Bonaire and Aruba joined more than a thousand media professionals in the Netherlands for the second Dutch Journalism Festival in Deventer.

The two-day event brought together journalists from across the Kingdom for discussions on local journalism, artificial intelligence, media ethics, collaboration and the pressures facing the profession.

St. Maarten was represented by The Daily Herald’s Rajesh Chintaman, who joined a panel titled “From Bonaire to Maastricht.”

The session examined how climate change is reported across different parts of the Kingdom and how its effects can vary sharply between the Caribbean and European Netherlands.

The festival also included discussions on mental health and peer support for journalists, as well as stronger cooperation between newsrooms across the Kingdom.

Organizers say support for Caribbean journalism has increased in recent years through grants, training and opportunities for collaboration.

The event also gave journalists from Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius a chance to build stronger professional links with colleagues in the Netherlands.
