Windward Islands Bank is highlighting its support for literacy and education initiatives as Sint Maarten marks Literacy Month and Sustainable Development Goal Month.

Throughout September, WIB employees participated in activities designed to encourage reading and strengthen learning among young people.

At Sister Borgia School, team members provide weekly Dutch-language support to help students develop language skills and confidence. Employees also visited St. Dominic Primary School and St. Joseph School to read with students and encourage a greater appreciation for books and storytelling.

These activities complement WIB’s broader support for education and literacy, including the D.E.A.R. initiative at the University of St. Martin, Reading Festival 2026 and a Beyond Kultura Events Foundation project aimed at distributing 600 books to schools and the public library across Sint Maarten.

WIB also supports locally researched publications that document and preserve the history and heritage of the Dutch Windward Islands.

The bank says these efforts reflect Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on quality education, and demonstrate how community development can begin with fundamental opportunities such as helping a child read, improving access to books and supporting language development.
