Former VSA Minister Richinel Brug hosted his second Day of the Elderly celebration on October 1st, bringing seniors together for a day of appreciation and recognition.

This year’s event was organized personally by Brug, with support from sponsors and community partners.

Six senior citizens were honored for continuing to serve and support others in the community: Raymond Jesurrun, Monique “Nanny Nurssy” Gumbs, Patricia Flanders, Emilia Hughes, Marva Van Henningen and Maria Chemont.

The event also recognized senior members of Sint Maarten’s media fraternity who continue contributing to public life, including Fernando Clark, Jacques “Billy D” Hamlet, Wendell Moore, Eddie Williams, Bibi Hodge Shaw, Don Hughes, Francis Carty, Fabian Badejo, Dwight Barran and Oral Gibbes.

Special recognition was given to Theodore Ricardo William for his pioneering contribution to local media.

Brug also used the occasion to renew his call for stronger retirement security, saying a mandatory supplementary pension system remains an important issue he hopes to advance in the future.
