The Nature Foundation Sint Maarten is expanding its work with the local fisheries sector through training, monitoring and new equipment aimed at supporting more sustainable fishing.
Five Sint Maarten-based fishers recently completed the Foundation’s 2026 workshop programme, covering marine biodiversity, threats to local ecosystems and the future of artisanal fishing.
Graduates will receive equipment such as boat pumps, fishfinders and winches to support safer and more sustainable fishing.
The Foundation has also launched a pilot fishery monitoring programme collecting information on species, size, weight, catch effort and interactions with sharks and rays.
At the Simpson Bay Fish Market, vendors have been trained to assist with monitoring, while new educational signs, multilingual materials and measuring tools for lobster and conch have also been introduced.
The Foundation is also advising government on the use of Fish Aggregation Devices, or FADs, which can help fishers target species such as mahi-mahi and tuna while potentially reducing pressure on reef fish.
The initiative is aimed at protecting marine resources while strengthening livelihoods in Sint Maarten’s artisanal fishing sector.

SPORTS SEGMENT: LOCAL ATHLETES, TABLE TENNIS AND CAPOEIRA TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT
We begin in Saint-Martin, where two young residents are taking an important step toward careers in basketball coaching.
Romario Benjamin and Lisette Richardson have joined the BPJEPS Basketball training programme at the Tony Parker Adéquat Academy in Lyon, France.
The opportunity was made possible through a partnership between Let’s Do It and Le Chemin de la Jeunesse, with support from the Tony Parker Adéquat Academy.
The programme prepares participants to become qualified basketball instructors and coaches, with training in planning sessions, working with different age groups and managing sports activities.
The initiative is part of a wider effort to build local coaching capacity and strengthen the development of basketball in Saint-Martin.
From basketball, we move to table tennis, where players gathered in St. Martin on October 10th for the Dr. Eugene Holiday Table Tennis Tournament.

And we close the sports segment with a different kind of movement and competition, as St. Martin hosted the Roots of Capoeira Festival from October 9th through the 11th.
The event brought together practitioners for several days celebrating capoeira, combining martial arts, movement, music and cultural tradition.
