Two Caribbean heritage institutions have been awarded Museum Grants from the Dutch Research Council, NWO, including the Sint Maarten National Heritage Foundation and the Saba Archaeological Center Foundation.

Sint Maarten’s project, led by S.M. Dehaney, will examine the island’s history of slavery, labour and emancipation, drawing on archaeological sites, ruins, family memories, museum collections and archives.

The research will also explore salt production, plantation life and indigenous history, with findings expected to strengthen future museum exhibitions and educational materials.

On Saba, researchers will focus on developing collection management and storage standards ahead of the planned opening of a new heritage center in 2029.

The two Caribbean projects are among 16 initiatives awarded funding in the latest round.

NWO says the Museum Grants programme is designed to strengthen the research role of museums and support deeper study of heritage and collections.

A big shout-out to our viewers in Saba, and congratulations to the heritage teams in both Saba and Sint Maarten. Newsdesk.
