ST. EUSTATIUS is hosting the first edition of Beyond the Curl, a two-day workshop exploring the connection between Black hair, African ancestry, Caribbean heritage and personal identity.
The October 13th and 14th programme is being led by Sharday Benett in collaboration with the Slavery Memorial Committee.
The sessions examine the historical meaning of Black hair and head wrapping, the influence of slavery and colonial beauty standards, and the evolution of natural hairstyles across generations.
Sint Maarten contributors Kenty Lichtenberg, founder of Kerai Kreative Style and Be Your Own Brand, and Maya Williams-Thomas, founder of Reflourish Haircare, are also taking part.
The workshop combines cultural discussion with practical demonstrations, natural hair education and conversations about confidence, self-acceptance and cultural pride.
Organizers say the goal is to preserve stories connected to Black hair while strengthening cultural links between neighboring Caribbean communities.
A big shout-out to our viewers in St. Eustatius. Newsdesk.
