The first phase of the Under the Hood project has concluded at Point Blanche Prison and the Miss Lalie Center, with a second phase now underway.

Over the past two months, resident and international volunteers worked together on creative and educational activities aimed at rehabilitation and personal development.

The project produced two newsletters, “Jungle News” at Point Blanche Prison and “The Rascals News” at Miss Lalie Center, giving residents a platform to contribute puzzles, word games and other content.

At Point Blanche, volunteers also launched the “Between the Bars” book club in partnership with the Sint Maarten Library, while helping establish a new satellite library.

Other activities included photography, painting, blackout poetry, podcasting, cooking and a movie club called “The Spot.”

Phase Two began on October 9th with a new group of international volunteers.

The project forms part of the Detention Sector Reform Program and is supported by the European Solidarity Corps, the Ministry of Justice, the Government of the Netherlands and UNODC.
