The Collective Prevention Service is reminding residents that proper handwashing remains one of the simplest ways to reduce the spread of infectious diseases.
The message comes as Sint Maarten observes Global Handwashing Day on October 15th under the theme “Be a Handwashing Hero!”
CPS says washing hands with soap and clean water can help prevent diarrheal illnesses and respiratory infections, including the common cold and influenza.
Residents are encouraged to wash their hands before preparing or eating food, after using the toilet, after coughing or sneezing, after handling garbage, and before and after caring for someone who is sick.
CPS says hand hygiene is especially important in schools, healthcare, childcare, hospitality and food preparation.
The agency is also reminding the public to wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
CPS says Global Handwashing Day is observed once a year, but clean hands should remain a daily habit year-round.
